STATE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
2023-2025
2023-2025
Welcome to South Carolina Society Colonial Dames XVII Century.
The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century was organized in 1915 during the meeting of the International Genealogical Congress at the Panama-Pacific Exposition to aid in the establishment of a College of Heraldry, the founding of chairs of Historical Research in Colleges and Universities, and to commemorate the heroic deeds of the founders of our great Republic, in order that men and women may be inspired to follow their example.
I grew up in Bishopville, SC. I have a degree Magna Cum Laude in English from the University of South Carolina. But I am a true Tiger, and my blood runs orange! My two daughters, Mary Knight Warriner and Henrietta (Rhett) W. Green, grew up in Camden. Hugh and I were married in Edenton, NC, where he lived at the time. We moved back to Bishopville 21 years ago.
I joined Colonial Dames XVII Century in 1985, 39 years ago. Prior to being elected State President, I served two terms as State Treasurer and one term as State First Vice President. I am currently a member of Wateree Chapter in Camden. This new chapter was chartered in July 2022 with 24 members. I am a retired legal assistant and municipal clerk. I served two terms on the Bishopville City Council, am active in the VFW Auxiliary, DAR, UDC, and I am the coordinator for Wreaths Across America at Bishopville Presbyterian Church. I raise all the money for wreaths and conduct the ceremony every December.
The South Carolina Society was organized in 1955 with Lillian Murphy Cain of St. Matthews as the first state president. In addition to endowing state and national scholarships and advocating for veterans of all wars with funding and gifts, the State Society has financially aided the Fisher House on the grounds of William Jennings Bryan Dorn V.A. Hospital in Columbia for four years. The Fisher House is a 15-bedroom and bath facility offering a home away from home for veterans and their families receiving treatment at Dorn V.A. Hospital.
In addition to continuing financial support to the Fisher House in Columbia, my projects for the next two years will include making the National Approved Applications Project database available to all 606 members in South Carolina, and inviting all state members to join our private Facebook page. We will continue our ongoing work with Heraldry and Coats of Arms.
The next two years will be exciting and interesting. If you happen to be in Camden, South Carolina, please stop by the Camden Archives on Broad Street and visit the Colonial Dames State library section. You may find your Colonial Ancestor in one of the books!
